Lineage overview
Suryan are a secluded sub-race of Youkai. Often described as “light given form”, the radiance that surrounds them is unmistakable and they are a spectacle for those who have never seen a Suryan before. Most Suryan are deeply spiritual and hold a reverence for light and its nurturing properties.
Suryan villages and towns tend to be located in high mountain valleys, as close to the sun as can be managed while still able to support crops. The warm light each Suryan gives off makes their villages pleasantly welcoming and even the most inhospitable seeming locations team with trees, farms, and wildlife due to their influence. It is not uncommon to scale a frigid mountain pass only to descend into a shallow valley full of warm sunlight and green nature fully at odds with the surrounding mountains.
These villages and towns often support mountaintop monasteries where Suryan monks learn and meditate on the Five Harmonies, with the first and oldest, Divyajyotiḥ Ālayaḥ, being located in a secluded section of the Nāganṛtya Parvataḥ placed upon the highest peak, Nīlāmbaraśikharaḥ. Five Harmonies monasteries produce revered wisdoms and graceful healers and are common pilgrimages for the wealthy and destitute alike.
Suryan adventurers carry that spirituality and sense of community with them on their journeys. While not all will be mystical monks capable of weaving light into healing threads, their willingness to help even in small ways is a common behavior. A Suryan adventurer is just as comfortable clearing the wilderness of dangerous monsters as they are cheerfully helping a farmer harvest their crops. Many Suryan have been taught from a young age the basic mysticism of Five Harmonies as a guiding principle, although those born and raised outside of those mountain communities may lack that connection.
Expect Suryan companions to be spiritual and compassionate to those around them.
“Jīvanaḥ jyotibhiḥ jāyate. All life springs from light.”
TL Notes:
Nāganṛtya Parvataḥ - The Mountains of the Dragon Dance
Nīlāmbaraśikharaḥ - The Blue-Robed Peak, in this case blue-robed is a poetic epithet for the sky.
Divyajyotiḥ Ālayaḥ - The Sanctuary of Divine Light
