Jiangshi

Jiangshi, a  subrace of Youkai, are beings that inhabit and reanimate dead bodies. When a Jiangshi is born from a Youkai parent, a mitama—the undeveloped Youkai spirit—is inserted into the corpse of a physical being, such as a Human or Chimera. A distinctive talisman is affixed to their head, signifying their status and anchoring their existence within the host body. This bond prevents the corpse from decaying and grants the Jiangshi the ability to restore the dead body and benefit from healing, making them resilient on the battlefield. Predominantly found within the confines of Kirara, Jiangshi are rare and often face discrimination in other nations due to their unsettling forms and their relentless ferocity in combat, where they operate without experiencing pain or fatigue.

Playing a Jiangshi involves embodying both strength and vulnerability. The unbreakable bond between the Jiangshi and their host body means that any severe damage to the corpse results in the Jiangshi's demise, introducing a critical vulnerability despite their formidable nature. In regions outside of Kirara, Jiangshi often encounter mistrust and prejudice. Additionally, a rising trend sees non-Youkai individuals traveling to Kirara to offer the corpses of their loved ones as hosts, driven by a deep desire to reconnect with those who have passed. This dynamic adds layers of emotional complexity and narrative tension for Jiangshi characters, who must navigate their powerful abilities alongside societal challenges. Jiangshi bring a unique combination of endurance, and a rich backstory to any adventuring party, making them compelling choices for players seeking depth and roleplaying potential.
