Identity & lore
Lineage overview
Cowfolk are a sub-race of Chimera, native to the rolling foothills around the northern mountains of Northi. Technically the same sub-race as Bullfolk, the extreme sexual dimorphism between Cowfolk and Bullfolk make them physically and visibly distinct. While Bullfolk tower over those around them with muscular builds, Cowfolk possess short and curvy figures. However, it is only the foolish that believe the dainty stature of Cowfolk is a vulnerability, as they are deceptively resilient and strong for their size.
Cowfolk culture prizes bonds more than any one thing. Bonds between friends, family, and partners. If a Cowfolk offers you their honest friendship, it is a friendship they will maintain and protect fiercely. If they offer you their partnership, they will never stray. This level of devotion can be off putting to some as it is often devoid of any need or requirement for reciprocation. Sometimes, especially for those used to betrayal in their lives, it feels “too good to be true”. And many don’t get the full extent of their devotion until their Cowfolk friend follows them on a harrowing journey or stands defiantly in front of a monster to protect them. But beware betraying a Cowfolk that has formed that bond with you. Because it is not your friend you will have to worry about, but their family should they ever learn about it.
When they settle in one place for long enough, Cowfolk often get incredibly domestic and there has never been an account of an uncomfortable or unwelcoming Cowfolk home. It doesn’t matter if it’s a home, an inn room, or a long term camp site, leave a Cowfolk in one place for long enough and you’ll begin to find trinkets, warm blankets, hand made cushions, and well stocked food supplies building up over time. However, they are rarely tied down to any location and will cheerfully pack everything up or even leave things behind to continue traveling.
Cowfolk adventurers are almost always a friend joining someone they care for on a journey, although some simply travel from their homes for the sheer novelty of seeing the rest of the world. They often take up frontline roles to directly support or protect their friends as a sturdy foundation of any party’s composition.
And most importantly: never, ever ask a Cowfolk for her milk unless you share a very, very close bond with her.
