Strategy
The defender’s combat strategy depends a bit on who their allies are. In general, they want to stick near their vulnerable allies and force melee enemies to attack the defender instead through Threatening Aura. If someone is Challenged, they will use Raise Shield. If they ever hit an attack of opportunity, they will always follow it up with Sweeping Opportunity.
Running this monster
Defenders are intended to be generic heroic enemies that focus on being a tanky frontline. They can be used for any race or situation and can easily be added to fit what you need. They are the heroic version of the ‘Tank’ generic enemy.
Defenders pair best with melee attackers that don’t have as much defense as they do. They can be run with a bunch of Grunt level allies or with a group of around 3 others of a similar type to them like the Assassin or Sniper etc.
The above stat block assumes they are using Medium Armor and a Shield. Any melee weapon can work for a defender, though polearms are the best option.
