Identity & lore
Lineage overview
Lizardfolk are a subspecies of Chimera native to the marshes and wetlands west of Sorthen. Their settlements are built with elegant hydromantic engineering, blending magic and design to rise above the flooded terrain—floating walkways, moisture-shielded libraries, and algae-filtered alchemical workshops are common. Though geographically remote, Lizardfolk settlements are self-sufficient and technologically sophisticated, designed for longevity in a land where the air hums with decay.
They are visually distinct with scaled limbs, slit-pupil eyes, and long muscular tails. This has led them to claim they descend from dragons. Kobolds, who claim the same origin, often reject these assertions outright, calling them fakers, pretenders and other more hostile insults. While there are some disputes regarding their heritage, these conflicts rarely lead to anything more than name calling from both sides.
By nature and culture, Lizardfolk are calm, deliberate, and slow to anger. Their society values stability, precision, and patience. Qualities that serve them well in a landscape where impulsiveness leads quickly to sinking mud or venomous fangs. Leadership is typically granted to those who demonstrate long-term vision rather than charisma, and decisions are often made after exhaustive study and debate. Artisans, scholars, and hydromancers hold great respect in their society, particularly those who contribute to the subtle shaping of their ever-changing environment.
Lizardfolk adventurers are uncommon but unmistakable. Those who leave the swamps often do so with deliberate purpose, seeking knowledge, reclaiming lost relics, or testing themselves against the wider world to affirm their strength and legacy. Unlike the boastful or glory-driven, Lizardfolk adventurers tend to approach danger with methodical caution and a long-term mindset, favoring preparation over bravado. Many act as medics, scouts, or tacticians within mixed parties, relying on their natural resilience, amphibious mobility, and calm under pressure. While some companions find them difficult to read, those who earn a Lizardfolk’s trust often find themselves with an unwavering ally—patient, perceptive, and quietly formidable.
